Joely Skye

I write gay romance under Joely Skye, and she’s been busy of late :)

Feral Lynx Wolf Town

But right now I am hard at work on a new Jorrie Spencer project. It’s not my easiest project to date, some days the writing is like pulling teeth, other days the words just fly. (Well, fly for me, a slow writer.) But I hope to have this out this year or early next year. More details as they become available.

Books on shelves

Well, I had no idea Chapters was going to carry The Strength of the Wolf. I don’t think it carried the first book in the series, The Strength of the Pack. Perhaps the obviously Canadian setting helped sway booksellers?

In any event, I was thrilled to go into a Chapters and see two copies of my book. That is a first for me, and I was more strongly affected than I thought I’d be.

Thanks to Vanessa Jaye for the heads-up!

Two pictures, one with spines, one with front covers. I didn’t face the books out.

Print book and contest!

The Strength of the Pack is not available everywhere, but it is on sale at amazon.com, amazon.ca and Chapters/Indigo right now. Which is very exciting!

There have also been real live sightings in Borders and Barnes and Noble :)

I’d love to see a picture of The Strength of the Pack in a store. If someone sent me such a photo, I would happily mail out the followup book, The Strength of the Wolf—this would be draw. Your choice of ebook or print book.

Reviews and Kindle

Two lovely reviews of The Strength of the Pack and The Strength of the Wolf at Howling Scribe. Both 9.5 ratings!

Hey, and The Strength of the Wolf is available through Kindle. It’s my only Kindle book to date, but I’m hoping the others will show up. I know there are some problems with Kindle, and we can’t even use it in Canada, but I still think it is just great that you can access books so easily with it. Some day I will have such a device.

Boxing Day treats

I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays, getting time with family and friends, and time to relax and kick back, too. Right now the most intense visiting is over for us, so I’ve been tripping around the internet and finding some lovely, wonderful things.

Book Utopia Mom mentioned The Strength of the Pack in her 2007 roundup! Lots of other interesting mentions there, by the way.

And la-la-ness wrote a lovely post about me, Joely Skye/Jorrie Spencer. While she’s most taken by Joely Skye work, she also mentions The Strength of the Wolf favorably.

Thank you so much!

And while I’m at it, I can’t help but point out that Marked is on the All Romance eBooks bestseller list at #3. I never hit that list before, let alone the top three :)

Reviews

Road to Romance reviewed both The Strength of the Pack and The Strength of the Wolf.

For PACK:

I enjoyed reading how these two fell in love and struggled to make their relationship work. For a new series about werewolves and the men and women they love, don’t miss book one, The Strength of the Pack.

For WOLF:

Jorrie Spencer has created some wonderful characters. Their emotions were so vivid and realistic, I couldn’t help be pulled into their lives.

Thank you, Stacey Brutger!

Also, a related werewolf book of mine, Marked by Joely Skye, has been reviewed. (Both Veronica and Seth appear in Marked.) Kimberley Spinney at ecataromance gives it 4.5 stars:

The entire novel was so engaging that I will definitely be adding Ms. Skye to my must read list.

On the Prowl

I’m a big Patricia Briggs fan, so I have to pick up this anthology. And…I really enjoyed it.

“Alpha and Omega” by Patricia Briggs. This story is set in the same world as her Mercy Thompson series, but the focus is on a different set of characters, namely Charles (Sam’s half-brother) and Anna, a relatively new werewolf who hasn’t had an easy time of it since she was turned against her will. Anna is pretty damaged and vulnerable, but in the right hands I love damaged, vulnerable characters who are able to move forward to a better place. This is a not a long story, and Charles and Anna’s relationship is just beginning, but I loved it and look forward to their novel.

“Inhuman” by Eileen Wilks. I’ve skimread a few reviews, and while I can’t remember specifics, I wasn’t sure this story would work for me. But I loved it, too! Wilks is balancing a lot of different elements (multiple realms, empaths, hellhounds, sidhe, queens), but she pulled it off for me. I found the worldbuilding fresh. The hero is a man, but he used to be something else, and I quite adored him, the slightly alien feel of him, and his strong sense of honor. The writing itself was very strong, too. I read Tempting Danger a few years ago and loved it. Since then, I’ve twice tried the second book in the series, Mortal Danger. But I’m going to have to try it again. Because this just reminded me how much I like Wilks’s writing.

“Buying Trouble” by Karen Chance. Karen Chance is a new-to-me author and I was very happy to be introduced to her writing. This is probably the tightest story of the three, although it took me a chapter or so to get properly sucked in. This is more fantasy romance than paranormal romance to my mind. (I don’t think there is an official line there.) It does start off in our world, but there are any number of magical creatures and a big chunk of time is spent in the Faerie. I don’t really want to give anything away, because there are a lot of twists and turns for a novella, and the author is juggling lots of different creatures. But she weaves in the worldbuilding seamlessly while giving you characters to root for. Loved the hero, too. I’ll have to look up her novels, though I fear they are not at all related to Claire and Heidar.

All and all, a very successful anthology. There’s one more story to go, but I’m going to save it for another time.

Other reviews:

I liked the stories a lot more than the above, but there are some interesting observations in the reviews.

Release Dates

I’ve got two release dates for my werewolf books! Yay!

June 19, 2007. The Strength of the Pack. Seth’s story.
September 4, 2007. The Strength of the Wolf. Veronica’s story.

I’m so glad to have them out within three months of each other. This will mean, I believe, print releases in September and December.

New Vampires?

A year or two ago I heard werewolves were the new vampires. To which I thought, cool, I’m writing werewolves.

Well, a lot of werewolf stories have been published since. In fact, I want to read more of them. Who’d like to recommend werewolves, particularly ebooks where I’m underread? I’d be grateful. So far I have Lauren Dane’s Enforcer on my tbb list.

Now (via Teach Me Tonight) Deirdre Knight says aliens are the new vampires. To which I think, cool, I like aliens.

So, true? False? I don’t believe I’ve read alien heroes or heroines.
